Why do your customers buy?

If I asked you, “What do you sell?”, most of you would answer with a more or less literal description of your product. But if I asked, “What do you think your customer is buying?”, the answer would be very different.

Companies usually know why their customers buy from them, yet very often they fail to communicate it. They keep pushing their product’s benefits or, worse, the same benefits their competitors promote but with an “and we do it better” (cheaper, bigger, prettier, more durable, etc.)

4 ways to seduce by adding value to your product or service

1.- Storytelling is a communication method deeply rooted in people. It’s about telling stories that convey values and knowledge through emotions, using narratives that build empathy with our target audience and link our service or product to a memory or a lived feeling. In any eCommerce, the best place to tell our story is the About us page

2.- Customer service is one of the best tools to build customer loyalty. A good customer service department goes far beyond being a channel for complaints, claims or concerns. Good customer service in any of its forms —phone, email and/or contact forms, live chat, click-to-call, virtual assistant or social media support— can give our business the decisive edge over competitors. That’s why it’s crucial for this department to work efficiently and respond as quickly as possible.

3.- Many companies still fly the flag of the old slogan satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. In general, satisfaction and price are almost always inversely related. A low (or competitive) price tends to be one of the easiest ways to improve customer satisfaction. However, it’s not all about price. Sometimes fast, reliable shipping, original packaging with attention to detail or product personalization can be what sets our online store apart from the competition.

To add value to our product and/or service, we need to know our customers’ needs and meet them effectively and attentively.

4.- The law gives customers the right to return a product within 14 days if they’re not satisfied, without having to give any reason. To prevent returns, it’s vital to provide as much information as possible about the product or service. However, we can turn this bad customer experience into a competitive advantage over other online stores: a simple, fast and clear returns process. Offering different return options, such as doorstep pickup, drop-off at a physical store or return by mail, can also noticeably increase our business’s added value.

Rivers of ink have been written about the art of seduction, and although I haven’t revealed any hidden secrets, I hope I’ve helped you understand how to seduce visitors into buying or how to keep your online store’s existing customers loyal. Likewise, I’d love it if you could now give me a hand by sharing this post or giving it a +1 so I can seduce Mr. Google.

Finally, just remember:

“No matter what you sell, what your customer is really buying, what they pay for and might even be willing to pay more for, is always the value, not the product”
