At Trilogi, as Shopify Plus Partners, we closely follow every improvement Shopify introduces to help brands better manage their data and marketing ecosystem. One of the latest is an update called Smart Data Protection, which goes exactly in this direction: more control and protection over how marketing pixels use data.
What’s new in Shopify?
Shopify is enabling by default a new automatic data-sharing optimization feature under Settings → Customer Events.
The goal is clear:
Stop inactive tools or integrations from receiving data unnecessarily.
According to Shopify, the system continuously analyzes which pixels deliver real value to the business and prioritizes data sharing with those that drive traffic and sales.
Here is their official announcement:
To protect your store from accidentally oversharing data, Shopify will soon turn on automatic data sharing optimization by default, which monitors your marketing pixels and only shares data with the tools that are driving results for your store. We see many pixels that haven’t sent a merchant any traffic or sales in weeks, months or even years, and this feature is designed to protect your store from exactly that situation if you forget to turn off sharing with inactive tools. We’ll analyze multiple signals, including traffic and sales, to determine whether sharing data with a specific tool is useful for your business. When we detect no signal from a pixel for days or weeks, we’ll pause data sharing until new signals appear, at which point data sharing will be turned back on.
You’ll see the setting enabled right away for all active marketing pixels, but it won’t start limiting data from pixels that aren’t driving results for at least the next seven days. To opt out of optimized data sharing, you can adjust your pixel settings in Settings > Customer events and set pixels to “always on” to keep full data sharing at all times.
How does this optimization work?
- Shopify monitors signals such as traffic and sales.
- If a pixel shows no activity for a period of time, data sharing is paused automatically.
- As soon as it generates signals again, data access is reactivated.
This way, your Shopify store shares data only with the tools that actually contribute to your results.
What are the benefits of this approach?
This improvement:
- Strengthens data protection.
- Reduces the risk of accidental oversharing.
- Keeps your marketing ecosystem clean and efficient.
- Aligns data use with active, relevant tools.
Especially useful for stores that have tried multiple platforms over time.
What should you keep in mind if you run paid media?
If you actively work with platforms such as:
- Meta Ads
- Google Ads
- TikTok Ads
- Klaviyo
Shopify lets you keep full control. For strategic pixels, you can ensure continuous access by setting them to “Always on”.
How to review your settings
- Go to Shopify Admin
- Go to Settings → Customer Events
- Review your active pixels
- Mark as “Always on” the ones that are key to your strategy

Automatic optimization is enabled right away, but it doesn’t limit data for the first 7 days, giving you time to review things calmly.
Our recommendation as Shopify Plus Partners
At Trilogi, we see this change as a good practice that helps brands:
- Gain greater visibility.
- Make better decisions.
- Ensure data is used efficiently and responsibly.
As always, what matters is to review the settings and adapt them to your specific strategy.
If you need help validating your tracking setup or making sure everything is aligned with your growth goals, we at Trilogi will be happy to help.
FAQs – Shopify Smart Data Protection
Smart Data Protection is a new Shopify feature that automatically optimizes data sharing by marketing pixels. Its goal is to stop inactive tools or integrations from continuing to receive data without delivering real value to the business.
Yes. Shopify enables this optimization automatically by default for all stores. However, for the first 7 days data use isn’t limited, giving you time to review and adjust your settings.
All marketing pixels set up in Shopify (for example, Meta, Google, TikTok, Klaviyo, etc.).
Shopify analyzes whether each pixel is generating relevant signals such as traffic or sales.
Shopify monitors multiple signals, mainly:
Traffic
Sales
If a pixel generates no signal for days or weeks, Shopify considers it isn’t adding value and automatically pauses data sharing with that tool.
When a pixel is paused:
It stops receiving data from Shopify.
It isn’t deleted or uninstalled.
As soon as it generates signals again, data sharing is reactivated automatically.
Only if you don’t review your settings.
If you actively work with key platforms such as Meta Ads, Google Ads or TikTok Ads, Shopify lets you force continuous data sharing by setting those pixels to “Always on”.
It means the pixel:
Will always receive data
Won’t be subject to automatic optimization
Will keep full data sharing at all times
It’s the recommended option for strategic tools in your marketing stack.
From your Shopify Admin:
Go to Settings → Customer Events
Review the list of active pixels
Mark as “Always on” the ones that are key to your strategy
Smart Data Protection helps:
Prevent accidental data oversharing
Strengthen data protection and governance
Keep a cleaner, more efficient marketing ecosystem
Align data use with truly active tools
It’s especially useful for stores that have tried many platforms over time.
No. You can opt out manually by setting pixels to “Always on”. Shopify offers full flexibility to adapt it to your strategy.
At Trilogi we recommend:
Reviewing your pixel settings as soon as possible
Marking key paid media and CRM platforms as “Always on”
Using this update as an opportunity to audit and optimize your tracking setup
If you need help validating your settings or making sure everything is aligned with your growth goals, we at Trilogi will be happy to help.
