What is ROAS?
Return on ad spend (ROAS) is a metric used to measure the effectiveness of an advertising campaign. To calculate ROAS, divide the revenue generated by the cost of the campaign. eCommerce businesses often use ROAS to measure the performance of their Google Ads campaigns, among others. However, it’s important to note that ROAS does not take into account other factors such as profit margin or customer lifetime value.
How to calculate ROAS correctly
This metric is a key way to measure the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns and is especially important for paid advertising. There are different ways to calculate ROAS, but the most common formula is (revenue / ad spend) x 100.
For example, if you generate €100 in sales from a campaign with €10 in ad spend, your ROAS would be 1,000%. Optimal values vary depending on a number of factors that can affect your ROAS, such as the type of product you sell and the size of your target market. However, if you keep a close eye on this metric, you can adjust your campaigns accordingly and make sure you’re getting the most out of your marketing budget.
The differences between ROAS and ROI
As a business owner, you’re always looking for ways to improve your results. One important metric to track is your return on investment (ROI). But what if you’re not sure what ROI is, or how it differs from another metric such as return on ad spend (ROAS)?
Here’s a breakdown of the main differences between ROAS and ROI:
ROI is a broad measure that looks at the overall performance of your business. It takes into account all forms of revenue and expenses, both those directly related to your advertising efforts and indirect ones.
ROAS is a more specific measure that only considers the revenue generated by your ad spend.
Because it includes all revenue and expenses, ROI can be negative, which means your company is losing money. ROAS, on the other hand, can never be negative because it only includes advertising costs.
ROI is useful for getting an overall view of your business performance. However, it can be hard to segment and isolate the impact of ad spend on overall profitability. That’s where ROAS comes in handy. By specifically tracking revenue generated by advertising, you can get a more accurate picture of the impact of your marketing efforts.

What is POAS and how can it improve sales?
Profit on Ad Spend (POAS) is an example of how digital marketing is constantly evolving. As the name suggests, this new metric is a new way of measuring the profit generated by the investment in an advertising campaign. This means that if someone clicks on an ad but no sale is made, the advertiser owes nothing. POAS differs from ROAS, or return on ad spend, in that ROAS measures how much revenue is generated for every euro spent on advertising, while POAS only measures sales directly attributable to the ads.
Here’s an example of the two formulas to understand the differences:
POAS = PROFIT / AD SPEND
ROAS = TOTAL REVENUE / AD SPEND
As we can see, POAS reflects the real value of sales and takes into account the profit margin of each one. Unlike ROAS, which considers total sales revenue without taking that margin into account.
Measuring the profitability of your paid campaigns is an exercise in understanding your business environment and recognizing the key goals of each ad. Adding new metrics such as POAS helps shape our results more realistically, so we don’t base our strategic decisions solely on ROAS, which isn’t always the most reliable metric.
