Fashion is one of the top-selling online sectors in Spain: according to Acotex, around 17% of fashion sales already happen through digital channels, in a market that came close to €11.1 billion in 2025 and grew just 0.6%. With volume flat, margin is won or lost in the details, and one of the most expensive is returns.
Every return carries shipping costs, warehouse handling and, often, product that comes back late and out of season. Reducing them doesn’t mean adding obstacles: it means helping the customer get it right the first time.
1. Understand why customers return
Before acting, measure. Classify return reasons by product, size and category:
- Too small or too big.
- The product doesn’t look like the photo.
- Quality or fabric different than expected.
- Buying several sizes to keep one.
With that data you’ll know whether the problem lies in a size guide, a photo or a specific pattern.
2. Size guides that actually help
A generic chart won’t do. Each garment needs its real measurements and a clear reference:
- Garment measurements, not just body measurements.
- The size the model is wearing and their height.
- Fit notes: “runs small, we recommend one size up”.
- Customer reviews with their size and experience.
3. An AI size recommender
An assistant based on AI Agents can ask the customer for their height, weight or the size they wear in other brands, and recommend the right size for each garment. It also answers questions about fabric, care or styling at any time.
4. Photos and videos that don’t mislead
The closer what the customer sees is to what they receive, the fewer returns. Show the garment in motion, on different bodies, with fabric detail and in natural light. Today it’s also possible to generate model and still-life photos with AI from the real garment, keeping color and shape accurate.
5. Unified stock and alternatives to returns
If the customer can exchange sizes in store, reserve online and pick up, or receive the product from the nearest store, the exchange replaces the return. For that you need unified stock across stores, warehouse and website: what we call Unified Commerce, with ERP, POS and online store connected.
6. Communicate your returns policy clearly
A clear policy builds trust and increases conversion. You can encourage exchanges over refunds, offer free returns to repeat customers or in physical stores, and simplify the process so the customer buys again.
7. Use the data to improve the product
Return reasons are valuable information for the product team: patterns that don’t fit, disappointing fabrics, colors that look different on screen. A dashboard that cross-references sales, returns and reasons helps you make data-driven decisions.
Conclusion
Reducing returns in online fashion is possible if you help the customer choose: real measurements, size recommendations, accurate photos and alternatives like in-store exchanges. The result is more margin and happier customers who come back.
