A website redesign is an opportunity to better explain what your company does, capture more leads and gain speed. But it’s also when many companies lose a large share of their Google traffic overnight. Almost always for the same reasons: URLs that change without redirects, content that disappears and a new site that’s slower than the old one.
1. Audit your current site before designing anything
Export every URL, its visits, its external links and the keywords it ranks for. That way you’ll know which pages can’t be touched, which can be merged and which can go.
2. Design the architecture with SEO and GEO from the wireframe
The page map has to answer what your customer is searching for, on Google and increasingly on AI search engines like ChatGPT. Define one page per search intent, with its keyword, its structured data and clear answers to common questions.
3. 301 redirect map
Every old URL that changes must redirect to its new equivalent. No exceptions. Also review internal links so they point directly to the new URLs.
4. Speed: the new site must be faster
Speed affects both rankings and conversion. According to the Milliseconds Make Millions study by Deloitte and Google, improving mobile load time by 0.1 seconds increased conversion by 8.4% on retail sites. Aim for the “good” Core Web Vitals thresholds: LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, INP of 200 milliseconds or less and CLS of 0.1 or less.
5. A CMS your team can use
A website only the agency can touch ends up outdated. WordPress, Webflow or a headless CMS like Strapi or Storyblok: choose based on who will publish and how often.
6. Test in a staging environment
Before going live, review the whole site in a test environment blocked from Google: redirects, tags, forms, analytics and speed.
7. Launch and monitor the first few weeks
After launch, check Search Console daily: 404 errors, non-indexed pages and drops in clicks. Fix quickly and compare traffic with pre-launch levels.
