At Trilogi, as Shopify Plus Partners, we closely follow all the improvements that Shopify introduces to help brands better manage their data and marketing ecosystem. One of the latest developments is its latest update called Smart Data Protection, which goes precisely in this direction: more control and protection over the use of marketing pixel data.
What's new with Shopify?
Shopify is enabling a new automatic data usage optimization feature by default in Settings → Customer Events.
The goal is clear:
Prevent inactive tools or integrations from continuing to receive data unnecessarily.
According to Shopify, the system continuously analyzes which pixels are adding real value to the business and prioritizes data exchange with those that generate traffic and sales.
This is their official statement:
To protect your store from accidentally sharing too much data, Shopify will soon enable automatic data sharing optimization by default, which monitors your marketing pixels and only shares data with the tools that are generating results for your store. We see many pixels that haven't sent traffic or sales to a merchant in weeks, months, or even years, and this feature is designed to protect your store from precisely that situation if you forget to disable sharing with inactive tools. We will analyze multiple signals, including traffic and sales, to determine whether sharing data with a specific tool is useful for your business. When we detect that there are no signals coming from a pixel for days or weeks, we will pause data sharing until new signals appear, at which point data sharing will be reactivated.
You will see the setting enabled immediately for all active marketing pixels, but it will not begin limiting data from pixels that are not generating results until at least within the next seven days. To opt out of optimized data sharing, you can adjust your pixel settings under Settings > Customer Events and set pixels to “always active” to maintain full data sharing at all times.
How does this optimization work?
- Shopify monitors signals such as traffic and sales.
- If a pixel shows no activity for a period of time, data exchange is automatically paused.
- As soon as it starts generating signals again, data access is reactivated.
This way, your Shopify store only shares data with the tools that are actually contributing to your results.
What are the benefits of this approach?
This improvement:
- Strengthen data protection.
- Reduces the risk of accidental oversharing.
- Keeps the marketing ecosystem clean and efficient.
- Align data usage with active and relevant tools.
Especially useful for stores that have tried multiple platforms over time.
What should you keep in mind if you use paid media?
If you actively work with platforms such as:
- Meta Ads
- Google Ads
- TikTok Ads
- Klaviyo
Shopify allows you to maintain complete control. For strategic pixels, you can ensure continuous access by setting them to "Always on."
How to review the settings
- Access Shopify Admin
- Go to Settings → Customer Events
- Check your active pixels
- Mark those that are key to your strategy as "Always on."

Automatic optimization is activated immediately, although it does not limit data for the first 7 days, giving you time to review it at your leisure.
Our recommendation as Shopify Plus Partners
At Trilogi, we see this change as a best practice that helps brands to:
- Have greater visibility.
- Make better decisions.
- Ensure that data is used efficiently and responsibly.
As always, the important thing is to review the settings and adapt them to your specific strategy.
If you need help validating your tracking setup or ensuring that everything is aligned with your growth objectives, we at Trilogi will be delighted to assist you.
FAQs – Shopify Smart Data Protection
Smart Data Protection is a new feature from Shopify that automatically optimizes data sharing from marketing pixels. Its goal is to prevent inactive tools or integrations from continuing to receive data without providing real value to the business.
Yes. Shopify automatically enables this optimization by default for all stores. However, during the first 7 days, data usage is not limited, giving you time to review and adjust the settings.
All marketing pixels configured in Shopify (e.g., Meta, Google, TikTok, Klaviyo, etc.).
Shopify analyzes whether each pixel is generating relevant signals such as traffic or sales.
Shopify monitors multiple signals, mainly:
Traffic
Sales
If a pixel does not generate any signals for days or weeks, Shopify considers that it is not adding value and automatically pauses data sharing with that tool.
When a pixel pauses:
It stops receiving data from Shopify.
It is not deleted or uninstalled.
As soon as it starts generating signals again, data exchange is automatically reactivated.
Only if you don't check the settings.
If you actively work with key platforms such as Meta Ads, Google Ads, or TikTok Ads, Shopify allows you to force continuous data usage by setting those pixels to "Always on."
This means that this pixel:
Will always receive data
Will not be subject to automatic optimization
Will maintain full data sharing at all times
This is the recommended option for strategic tools within your marketing stack.
From your Shopify Admin:
Go to Settings → Customer Events
Review the list of active pixels
Mark those that are key to your strategy as "Always on."
Smart Data Protection helps to:
Prevent accidental oversharing of data
Strengthen data protection and governance
Maintain a cleaner and more efficient marketing ecosystem
Align data usage with truly active tools
It is especially useful in stores that have tried many platforms over time.
No. You can manually opt out by setting the pixels to "Always on." Shopify offers complete flexibility to adapt it to your strategy.
At Trilogi, we recommend:
Review your pixel configuration as soon as possible
Mark key paid media and CRM platforms as "Always on"
Take advantage of this improvement as an opportunity to audit and optimize your tracking setup
If you need help validating your configuration or ensuring that everything is aligned with your growth objectives, we at Trilogi will be happy to assist you.
