Gucci sues Alibaba over counterfeit products on its ecommerce platforms

by TRILOGI Press

More troubles over counterfeit products for Alibaba: the Chinese ecommerce giant has been sued by Kering SA, the company controlling brands such as Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga,  Puma and Volcom. These accusations are nothing new for Alibaba, as we reported earlier this year. According to Kering, products carrying their trademarks are sold on Tmall, the China ecommerce platform. “Alibaba has allowed for counterfeit sales to continue even when it had been expressly informed that merchants were selling fake products”, said a spokeman.

Alibaba has invested a lot of money and effort in order to rid his platform from counterfeit products, in particular ahead of its IPO in 2014. According to the company, “no products can be sold on the Site without the explicit permission from the intellectual property right holder”. Even though they surely are working on it, it may still be far from the truth, at least for Gucci.
