Images on our ecommerce sites, and websites in general, account for a large share of total page weight, so they are largely responsible for load speed<\/p>\n

Properly processing and compressing these images is important and necessary.
\nAn overly heavy store will load more slowly, hurting users\u2019 browsing experience.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why we\u2019re seeing growing interest in advice on proper image processing, and part of that interest focuses on these three formats, seemingly new and so little known until now.<\/p>\n

Today we\u2019ll focus on them and, specifically, on WebP<\/strong>, which could well become the next standard for images on the internet.<\/p>\n

But first, let\u2019s take a quick look at these 3 formats to see what they are and what they can offer.<\/p>\n

Next-generation formats<\/strong><\/h2>\n

JPEG 2000<\/strong><\/p>\n

Created in 2000<\/strong> by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, JPEG 2000 <\/strong>was designed to outperform JPEG <\/strong>itself, offering better image compression, with or without quality loss.<\/p>\n

This format is supported by much of the image editing software available, and its popularity varies across offline sectors.<\/p>\n

Online, however, this format is only supported by Apple<\/strong>\u2019s Safari<\/strong> browsers, on both MacOS<\/strong> and IOS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

JPEG XR<\/strong><\/p>\n

Created by Microsoft<\/strong> in 2009<\/strong>, with the same aim of delivering higher image quality at a smaller file size than JPEG. <\/strong>Online support is limited to Microsoft browsers: Edge<\/strong> and Explorer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

WebP<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finally, there\u2019s WebP<\/strong>, created in 2010<\/strong> by Google<\/strong> to provide a format specifically for the web.
\nLike the other two formats, WebP<\/strong> offers better image compression quality than JPEG<\/strong>, and it\u2019s supported by most browsers, reaching 77% of users<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For this reason, WebP<\/strong> is a strong candidate to become the next image compression standard on the internet.<\/p>\n

So should we start using WebP now?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This image format has good cross-browser compatibility; however, Apple<\/strong> browsers don\u2019t support it yet<\/strong>, which affects 19% of users.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why, to use this format (or any other), you need to add fallbacks<\/strong> to your HTML \/ CSS<\/strong> code to make sure no browser is left unable to display the images.<\/p>\n

For example, until now, if we wanted to insert an image in our HTML<\/strong> code, we\u2019d do it roughly like this:<\/p>\n

Whereas if we use WebP<\/strong>, we need to call the image like this:<\/p>\n

As you can see, we need two copies of the image, one in WebP,<\/strong> and another in JPEG <\/strong>for the fallback<\/strong>, plus several extra lines of code.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

For images inserted via CSS<\/strong>, we need to create a specific class for each format and, using javaScript<\/strong> with a plug-in such as Modernizr.<\/a> apply one class or the other in our HTML<\/strong> depending on whether the client\u2019s browser supports the new format. It would look roughly like this:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Using the new format still requires extra work that\u2019s worth weighing up, which is why we don\u2019t fully recommend it yet.<\/p>\n

Some websites that need to display huge numbers of images, such as Shutterstock<\/a>, have already invested in automating the implementation process.<\/p>\n

Over time, support for this new format will spread to all browsers, and it\u2019s then \u2014when we can call a WebP<\/strong> file just as we would a JPEG<\/strong> or a PNG<\/strong>\u2014 that we\u2019ll recommend using it.<\/p>\n

Until then, the classic JPEG<\/strong> and PNG<\/strong> formats are the ones fully supported in all browsers, and by applying good image compression in your favorite image editor or with online tools such as tinypng.com<\/a>, we can deliver fast browsing that meets users\u2019 expectations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
