Choosing a platform is one of the decisions that most shapes an eCommerce project. And it\u2019s often made for the wrong reasons: because competitors use it, because it\u2019s the best known or because the license looks cheap. The result is migrations after two years, impossible integrations or a bill for apps and development nobody had planned for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The market deserves it: according to the CNMC, eCommerce in Spain generated more than \u20ac114.8 billion in 2025. To avoid mistakes, at TRILOGI we always compare platforms using the same eight criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Time to implement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When do you need to be selling? A SaaS platform like Shopify lets you launch in a few weeks; a composable architecture like commercetools needs months of design and development. Fast isn\u2019t always better and slow isn\u2019t always more complete: it depends on what you need to solve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Features<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

List what your business truly needs: B2B selling with customer-specific pricing, multi-store, configurators, subscriptions, marketplaces, multi-language or multi-currency. If you sell to businesses, check that B2B is native and not an add-on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Integration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your store has to talk to your ERP, PIM, CRM, warehouse and carriers. Review the quality of the API and how it will connect with the rest of your systems. In many projects this matters more than design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Adaptability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your business will change. Can you adapt the checkout, create new product types or change pricing logic without rebuilding the store? Open or API-first platforms give more room; closed ones, more simplicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Security and privacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Backups, disaster recovery plan, security updates and GDPR compliance. On a self-hosted platform these tasks are yours; on SaaS, the vendor\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Support and SLA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Who responds if the store goes down on a Friday night in the middle of a campaign? Ask about committed response times and who provides support: the vendor, the agency or both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Third-party dependencies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every app or module is a monthly cost, a pending update and a potential point of failure. Count how many external pieces you\u2019ll need to cover your features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Total cost of ownership (TCO)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t stop at the license. Add up hosting, apps and modules, transaction fees, and corrective, evolutionary and preventive maintenance over at least three years. A platform that\u2019s cheap upfront can end up the most expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
